Winter Dreams
Winter Story – Wildkogelbahn, 7:15 a.m. – When the Graben is closed
Blue sky, fresh powder snow – a picture-perfect day.
The sun slowly rises above the peaks, the valley still lies in shadow.
The gondola glides smoothly uphill. Inside: Jonas, Paul, and Marko. Three ski instructors, three thermos flasks, three snow-covered jackets.
Jonas leans forward, looking out:
“This year, the Graben is closed again.”
Marko grins immediately.
“Well then… let’s go!”
Paul laughs.
“Seriously, the same story every year.”
Marko nods. “Sure. When the Graben is closed, that’s when winter truly begins.” He leans back, hands folded. “Back then we were four or five guys – Wildkogel kids. When it really snowed, we went everywhere. The slope was too tame. Off-piste, through the woods, over jumps – that was our playground.”
Jonas grins.
“Of course, there were no rules.”
“No rules, no coaches, no phones,” says Marko. “Just snow, friends, and the courage to carve a new track.”
He looks outside, where the Ganzer lift sparkles in the sunlight.
“We were flying. All day long. From the first lift to the last. And if someone fell – up again and keep going!”
Paul bursts out laughing. “Today you’d call that freeride.”
Marko shakes his head.
“Back then we just said: the Graben is closed.”
